Palazzo Mansi - Collections of handmade textiles

Print this page

The collection of textiles owned by the Museum gives an overview of the Tuscan (mostly Luccan) production between the 15th and the 20th century, displaying examples of ecclesiastic and civilian clothing as well as fragments of hangings. Exceptionally interesting are also the Coptic fabrics from the 6th-7th century donated to the Museum by the Tongiorgi family.

It is well known that nothing is left in town of the precious fabrics that, between the 12th and the 14th century, made Lucca an internationally-renowned production centre; some examples, saved from the ravages of time and men, are scattered in museums all over Europe.

Until the 18th century, Luccan textile manufacture, though no longer renowned and prestigious as it used to be, managed to keep thriving, mainly thanks to local demand; at the same time, it found an original way to develop the “poor” production of the so-called rustic fabrics, which quickly found a market both in and out of town and, still to this day, characterize the local textile tradition.
